Attempted to go June 12 2020. Spring rains have made road all but impassable. Stuck multiple times, damaged boat trailer. You need a winch and some disregard your equipment to get there. Lake level very high now, and water is very murky,. All that for a handful of mid size Pike and only 2 Walleye. Not like I remember it.

Can confirm the water is VERY low this year. The public launch road is a complete nightmare. Unless you're up for a guaranteed adventure, I wouldnt risk it. 4 fish caught in 3 days.

I heard the ice is off and the water level is very low. Does anyone know the shape of the road in and the launch at the public launch?

by Fishcon1 on May. 10, 2020
Does anyone know if ice is off the lake yet

Spent and evening and a morning at Winefred Lake. Only caught a total of 3 pike but 12.5, 19 and 22.5 lbers will do. Struggled with a monster at the hole for approx. 10 minutes but couldn't get it's head up a 10%u201D hole until it cut the 30lb braided line. Biggest fish I've ever seen. Estimate 30 lbs. Paul & Sherry at Winefred lake Outfitters are Awesome!

went in to Winefred Lake, 1/2 day on the 13th, full days on the 14th and 15th and 1/2 day on the 16th, stayed at Winefred Lake Outfitters, locally knows as Paul's Place, Trapper Paul was wonderful and bent over backwards for us all four days, roads in and out were 100% , we tried all the common places like,The Flats, Banana Island, both Bird Islands, Trapper's Cabin, The Cliff's, basically, the only place we did not go was the Narrows, best spot was the area right in front of Winefred Lodge's out post camp, I think it is on the Sand River, now for the fishing report, while others said it was slow, we caught a total of thirty fish, missed lots of strikes, walleye up to 5 pounds and five pike over 44 inches, they maybe weighed between 17 to 19 pounds, used every proven pike lures that we had, but the best for the big pike was the 5 inch flutter spoons made by Moonshine, in the glow white with 6 black dots, then the glow blue and glow green in that order, the other big fish were hitting HJ 12 Husky Jerk, Fire Tiger in the discontinued color and can not be found anywhere, water temps ranged from 57 to 60.5, fun by all, great food, full moon and weather was all good except one day, thanks to Darryl McGrath with all of his knowledge with the lake ... planning a trip, book with Paul and you won't be disappointed ... cheers ... doyle

by Rman on Oct. 17, 2018
How is the lodge with the new ownership? Was it still busy with the zero limit on pike?

by Fortune1 on Aug. 24, 2018
Also was surprised to see 2018 regs catch and release only now for Pike.

Was here last weekend. Large Indigenous tent camp set up before mud hole on public launch road. Netting the lake. Public launch road in very poor shape. Don’t go in alone and have a way to get out etc... Lake was poor fishing, massive algae bloom covering the whole lake. Caught 5 fish in 2 days. Can’t see further than 6” in the water. Wake from the boat on the water was dark green.

by Krutov44 on Mar. 30, 2018
Fished off Sandy River islands on Mar. 23rd. Caught three 18lbers, two 16lbers, 14lber, & two 12lber Pike. Caught 1st and only Walleye seen of three trips this year. Very slow fishing this year compared to other years.

I wouldn't take a12ft Boat on that lake. It's huge and the wind can be brutal. If you get a really calm day you would be ok I'm some of the bays but I don't think you would want to cross the lake.

by Slavelakeslayer on Mar. 19, 2018
no theres ice

by BreannaC on Mar. 18, 2018
Howms the weather and the lake conditions here? I'm from 5 hours south and want to plan a weekend trip in the summer. Will a 12ft Harbercraft aluminum fishing boat do the trick?

by Rman on Mar. 5, 2018
How's the drive in? Pulling the sleds up, can I get all the way in?

by LRD V8R on Feb. 12, 2018
Well done Fluffy...how are you moving around on the ice? How is the snow?

by Fluffyzweld on Feb. 11, 2018
Fishing was slow, but pulled out a handfull of 12-19 lbs pike out by the islands
by FlounderPounder on Jan. 24, 2018
How much snow is on the lake? Accessible with a pickup ?

Anyone have an update on ice conditions?
by Wrelyks on Oct. 18, 2017
Anyone interested on putring bit of money toward mini x rental? I'll put time in to fix up launch and couple the bad spot's......

by iFish Guest on Sep. 20, 2017
Access to the public launch was pretty normal. Bad in the same spots but passable.

by Ozzzzz on Sep. 11, 2017
The fishing was good, but the access to the public launch was terrible. It looked like the public launch has been dug out with an excavator. We paid the launch fees at the lodge, and it was $52.50 per boat. Criminal.

by Mike. B on Aug. 24, 2017
Has anyone been to the lake lately. Hoping to drive in on Friday or Saturday. How's the road?

by Swampy on Aug. 7, 2017
tried to get in last week, the road was impassable. turned around (which was a task in itself) and fishing Christina instead with decent results.
by Wrelyks on Jul. 11, 2017
Two guys stuck at start of trail when I went in last week. Pull one with sling and other with winch. Road is deteriorating with rain condition's. Lake level is very high and there is not really a beach to pullbboat up on now.

by Big Dug on May. 29, 2017
Hi all would any one have any updates on the public launch and the road to it. Cheers

by Oilman72 on May. 26, 2017
We work in the area. Being such a remote area,a lot of times we are the only people around and usually have to pull out a dozen trucks per season down there. If you catch it right after the grader has been down to the lodge it is usually pretty good. I wouldn't tow in anything of significant value IMO.

by NorthernYaker on May. 23, 2017
Was a breeze getting in and out last year, I had good tires but no lift on my F150...yes the section from the grist lake turn is quite narrow and if it's rained for several days it could be a little tricky. As for the launch none of the boats that made it down this same "horrible" road had issues launching or getting to the launch.

by MiltMongrel on May. 23, 2017
If you don't have a lifted 4x4 with fresh mud tires, you're going to get stuck either going to,or on the public launch road. Especially if it rains. Launch road is narrow and will definitely scratch up anything going down it. The Public launch is extremely steep. Tough to launch on a windy day with all the big boulders and rocks around the launch area. Only been there a couple times and seen a few damaged legs.
by Wrelyks on May. 16, 2017
Road to public launch is really bad. You may get in but if it rains while in there you may not get out. Two vehicles are a must and come alongs or winches are a good idea. Stock trucks with stock tires and running boards are a bad idea and your paint will get scratched.

by Rob marsh on May. 13, 2017
Will do. Do you know if there is somewhere to camp and launch a boat on that lake other than the lodge?

by Parismina Dave on May. 12, 2017
Let me know what they say, I wanted to go there next weekend too.

by Rob marsh on May. 12, 2017
Lodge called 2 days ago. Still 2' of ice on south end of lake. They are calling me again Wednesday with an update as I have a reservation for next weekend :(

by Parismina Dave on May. 10, 2017
Is the ice off yet?

by Krutov44 on Mar. 30, 2017
This is by far the best lake I've ever fished in Alberta. 52 Walleye in one day & two 18, 17, two 16, 15, & 14 lber pike. Unreal fishing

by TheRook on Jul. 11, 2016
This lake is a producer. 71 cm walleye and multiple 10+ lbs pike. Dead weight all day. Rough road comin in. One guy had a rock fly right through his windshield. We'll be back Winny!

by Jordan414444 on Jun. 17, 2016
Always my favourite lake was there today fished for 8.5 hours and caught 169 fish between 3 of us biggest was 15.15lbs and 110cm long looked bigger to me but the scale don't lie lol roads were rough getting in but if you have a good 4x4 you should be ok!!!

Almost 2 feet of ice, more than safe for a truck to be on. Lots of fish, the walleye are hungry right now!

Unbelievable four days at Winefred lake lodge. Our group of 7 caught over 200 fish in 2 1/2 days. All of us were in the over 40 club, I caught 7 between 42 and 44" biggest caught in group was 47". We were throwing 30's and 36's back like they were annoying minnows. Best fishing experience in Alberta for big fish. The road from airport to Lodge is really like what everyone says, it sucks! You need a 4x4 and do not take your own boat.
