Booked some time off work to head up to cold lake from Calgary along with some buddies from Regina. Heading up in about a week and a half. We're not looking to keep fish. Just want to catch some monsters! :D. Lakers, pike, walleye, burbot. We don't have sleds. Any pointers about locations to fish would be greatly appreciated! I've only seen machines cross. With this cold weather the chances are better of getting across with a truck, but why risk it?

Ice Report: 26 in
Ice thickness is good, large ice ridge running from the north side of PP to French Bay. Fishing was poor on the 17th, 18th. Please use caution around the ice Ridges ! Good luck.

by Tootall83 on Feb. 19, 2017

Trucks going through the ice. English bay area

Star Star Star Star Star

by Romanchuk8 on Feb. 17, 2017

You would have to cross a large pressure ridge to fish Sask. from the PP. I was out there last weekend and we crossed with skidoos. Took a while to find a good spot to cross even with sleds. 2-3 feet of open water between the ice in spots. With a truck, I personally would never attempt that crossing.

Star Star Star Star Star

by Fish fry on Feb. 16, 2017

Is there a lot of pressure ridges now? Can a guy drive to Saskatchewan side from PP? Planning a trip to come up there some feedback would be helpful

by Tootall83 on Feb. 14, 2017

I went from provincial then East to the north side of French bay. Was rough but never fell through.

Star Star Star Star Star

Star Star Star Star Star

Totally agree, it's fairly easy to find regulations now days. No need to ask, and always best to check out yourself or be led with possibly wrong info from someone else.

by Mike1986AB on Jan. 20, 2017

If people can't figure out the reg's themselves maybe they shouldn't be fishing.

Out on May 31 and lakers would not stay off my line. First bite I hooked a fatty and lost in about 5 seconds. Reeled in to reset bait and downrigger and found a 10 incher on my hook (didn't notice it because of downrigger) that had bite marks that almost reached gill plates. Landed 6 and lost 4 in 2 hours. Had to quit because I ran out of bait. Can't wait to get back out!

Star Star Star Star Star

by Ben1 on Feb. 18, 2016

Two of us were also out all weekend 13th & 14th and fished hard with poor results! 2 lakers Saturday and one laker Sunday. One fish about 4lbs off point between French and centre bay caught on smelt and two good fish about 8-10lbs on white tube jigs. Very few fish showing on finder. Approx 15 inches of ice everywhere but some very poor wet spots of slush under snow making driving difficult and dangerous in places. Tried Herring smelt and minnows with all types of jigs too but barely a fish showing anywhere on the finder!

Fished Sat: Marina. Lots of people driving on. I did not. 15-16" ice out about 2-300ft. 1 bite, none landed. Sun- Prov Park, lots of drivers, many parked on ice at launch. 16-17" of ice off the point. No bites whatsoever. Switched up lots, tried different depths, presentations etc. Tough weekend. It was my first time trying the provincial park this weekend. If you can sled your stuff out to the depths you want it was a great place to drive on, unload, etc. Feels much more private than the marina if you aren't going more than a few km from shore

Star Star Star Star Star

Last weekend it was 10 inches off of the provincial park up to about 300m from shore then we drilled and found only 7 inches and decided that where we'd camp in the 4runner. Only a very few fishing marked in that 25 foot zone. I'd suggest being very careful driving out still.

To fish Lakers use smelt on a harness depth approx 150 feet of line... hit bottom and reel up a foot or two... remove barbs and please for gosh sakes reel up slow from the bottom when you get one... come up too fast and the fish don't have time to get rid of the air, expand and die... this will mean the lake will go to tags eventually... we don't want that. Ps. Keep your bait active or you will not get a thing.

I find it interesting that the limit for keeping a fish here is 75" or higher. I just finished doing a charter fishing trip out of Ucluet BC and it is the opposite. The keepers for salmon out here is 75" or less as they do not want anyone keeping the breeders which are the bigger fish. Anyone know why it is backwards in Cold Lake AB?

I have lived at Cold Lake for 10 years now. There have always been a lot of lakers in the water and I agree with a lot of the comments about how the limit size should change. However just posting complaints on this forum will not change anything. For all you trout hunters out there that really want to initiate change rather than just complain among ourselves, contact the fisheries at esrd.info-centre@gov.ab.ca They will reply and are open to discussion. I have been voicing my concerns to them, however just one voice may not be enough. Obviously there are a lot of us that want to create change and if we go about it properly we just might. There has to be a solution such as slot sizing or tagging to limit the amount we take home rather than just making it very difficult. If every person that wants change contacts them at esrd.info-centre@gov.ab.ca then they have no choice but to listen. Have fun fishing.

you for sure know i lot more about fish that i do and i fully apologize for my comment i dont wanted to be rude at all and i do not fish for trophy i go to cold lake because lakers are my favorite specie to fish .i agree with you would be fun to be able to keep smaller fish to eat because those 75 cm plus do not taste that great but on the other hand i spend about 15 to 2p days fishing on cold lake and its common to see 30+boats on the water so if every one start keeping smaller trouts the laker wouldnt be able to keep up with the pressure. anyway that what i think and net fishing is the biggest joke ever the government should grow some ball and shut them down they ruin all the lakes for us and i got stuck on a lost net by the marina this spring .i like catching lot of lakers so that why i go to cold lake but im being smart about it i only target fish around 70 and above otherwise there chance to survive are really limited anyway that what i got told .

Star Star Star Star Star

by ColdLakefan on Aug. 23, 2015

bruno27, we obviously don't fish for the same purpose you and I. I also understand that big fish are easy preys to fishing nets as well, and don't tell me you didn't see them out there. There is obviously a method to their management madness, but I don't get it. At any point in time on Cold Lake, Marie Lake...there are hundreds of fishermen/women catching and releasing on average 10 fish a day. A good deal of them dying. You get the guys like me who wants a fish to eat, and let them keep a 3 lb fish and you may not see me there for weeks. My point is that is that the rules are economically focused and are fitting only a minority of us. I am a marine biologist by trade and see the fine balance in managing such a big lake while protecting various populations of fish and bait fish. I still think it is done wrong. I would be glad to hear your opinion on this.

by Jitty on Aug. 22, 2015

by bruno27 on Aug. 22, 2015

if you dont like the rule go fishing somewhere else and dont complain about it

Star Star Star Star Star

by ColdLakefan on Aug. 21, 2015

What kind of management is that if I am allowed to unintentionally kill 50 lakers a day or walleye in several other lakes for that matter just to ensure the trophy hunters can catch uneatable monsters. The great breeders are not the 75 they are the ones we pull up and throw back. Its a great way to promote hatcheries, but with the monies all of us put into boats, gears, licences... ah and lets not talk about the boat ramps.

Hey bruno27. I have fished for lakers for a couple years now, my largest is 74.5cm. Dumb regs changed a couple years ago from 65cm to 75cm. They say it will help sustain the population. Fisheries must want to have a bunch of fish that are too big to reproduce but will eat all the food that will sustain the smaller fish that are much better for eating. Pierce lake in Saskatchewan shares the same water as Cold Lake and they can keep 1 over, and 1 under 65cm. Their fisheries seem to be doing quite well.

Well, what can I say. Definitely tough fishing out here. 3 guys, 11 hrs of fishing, drilled tons of holes. Fished in front of the marina, 45 to 95 ft. Nothing. Went out to prov park, fished the hump, the points, 15 to 125 ft of water. Barely any marks on the sonar. Using 3-4 inch tube jigs/bucktails, white, chartreuse, glow plugs tipped with smelts/herring. No bites, love the lake, great weather just tough fishing. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! How was others fishing stories?

Star Star Star Star Star

by iFish Guest on Jan. 20, 2014

As far as the info for the long distance travellers I suggest using a 3-4 inch squid jig,( yellow, white, green, smoke/w glitter on overcast days), tip with a minnow or shrimp, the fish hunt in different columns depending on the day, if you dont have a sonar device stick to the bottom and work 20'-40' up. Most of the keepers I've caught have been in the 70-100 ft range. Good luck and tight lines.

Star Star Star Star Star

by iFish Guest on Sep. 14, 2013

My last comment said to use white hair panther marten lunker spinner, but I messed up. I meant to say White haired Panther Martin Big Belly spinner with a minnow. Most strikes are halfway up minnow body and are about an inch from the hook may need to rig up a stinger. Just finished closing day today caught 3 in 4 hours which isn't bad because they are in spawn now. Can't wait till ice fishing then next year. Too bad I can't share pics.

Star Star Star Star Star

by iFish Guest on Sep. 13, 2013

They are starting their spawn now but you can fish for them till sep 15. Still hammering them though. You definitely need to purchase a downrigger. Been using white hair panther Martin lunker spinner with minnow and average 2-3/hour at 100 ft

Wife and kids went out from 6am till 3 pm. Iced one large lake trout and pike both legal and then some.caught both before 8:30am Missed many bites and had a few get off until 10 then nothing but very light nibbles. Managed one more keeper around 1pm. Fished from 45 foot bottoms to 120 foot bottoms. All up and down column. Overall a slow day. Snow on lake is very soft and dence when temp gets warm. Need 4x4 with weight and shovel or chains.

Mike -- sorry I forgot to add that my friend was only fishing about 30 of water.....we heard his tip up trip and he looked Down the hole and the trout spat the bait and When it was falling back down, the laker smashed it and then the hand fight against the laker was on!!! Maybe the laker thought my friends "heavy duty anchor rope tipup line" was some structure in the lake..... But back to the point Mike I would like to know where u found this article about lake trout not being able to "see in 100 feet of water" pfffffff ya right

Light can only penatrate about 35ft underwater. In a deep water more than 100 ft , it would be totally dark. Fish would need a flashlight to see the line.

Went fishin at cold lake last weekend, I was up at 230 am- left my house at 310 pic up four other people and were at the lake at 830- fishing was ok.... I caught a six pounder and my buddy caught one the same size, but the funny thing was I thought u had to use flocarbon for best results but my buddy had crazy heavy duty - white Tip up line and I was bugging him about putting an anchor line down the hole. Haha but right after i was bugging him - his flag pops up and its a nice laker .... Can anyone explain this to me why a laker would still bite on heavy duty rope line!

Was out at Carson lake this weekend (by Whitecourt); a few vehicles on the ice (fewer than normal) but ice only about 12 inches deep due to heavy snow cover.
