The north end of coal lake on both sides of Hwy 616 always has people fishing from shore, the south end at of coal lake has decent shore fishing but you can also fish the spillway south of the dam.

It’s updated - you have to make sure you update your reg’s from the more page!

by Yuno_Gasai on Jun. 6, 2020
Ifish Alberta has not updated it yet but the laws changed, you can now only keep one pike but it's no size restrictions so those 20%u201D pike are now dinner.

Fish lake often, not many large fish but many just shy of keeper size. We fish in water that is about 8 to 10 feet and have fair success.

by Jueneugene on Jul. 4, 2018
A lot of weeds all around the lake, recommend using top water lure

by AGL on Jul. 1, 2018
Went yesterday and the weeds were too thick on the north end of the lake for any boating or fishing.
by Oilersfan73 on May. 22, 2018
Never been to Coal Lake but am interested since it is close. Is it deep enough to put a 20' Bayliner on or is that too much boat for it?

Thanks for your reply duckhunter33 and Riverbear! I try not to drive on the icy lake. If the ice is very thick, I'll drive on it. Merry Christmas to everybody!

by Riverbear on Dec. 23, 2017
Ram traffic starts. Lol. Btw if you are really nervous. Open your doors too. If the front goes in (god forbid) the doors should hopefully catch better ice.
by duckhunter33 on Dec. 23, 2017
Seatbelts off, windows down. Should be good to drive on with this cold snap we have had all week.

by Ilovefishing on Dec. 22, 2017

Anyone catching here? I'm wanting to take my son to catch some jacks. Any info would be appreciated.
by BigTiny on Jan. 25, 2017
I have major success with an orange 1/2 ounce or 3/8 jig head and a white rubber worm with a flat tail. Not sure what they are called. But regardless they seem to hammer it every time.
by Tack Man on Jan. 22, 2017
Try smelts on a leader/treble hook. 6-12 ft of water. I recently started trying frozen anchovies. The pike are fatter than last winter so I'm using bigger bait.

by Goforgillie on Jan. 21, 2017
Can I ask what everyone is using for bait? I have been there a few times and I have fish on the flasher but can't get them to bite. Any help would be great. I have used jigs, jig spoon and rotating power minnow with maggots

by Zedzded on Aug. 6, 2016
Went out last night. Didnt go too far down the lake, caught two small pike, had fun. Certainly some weeds, would like some tips on catching perch there.

by nmfp on Aug. 5, 2016
Went out for a few hours last night. Caught 5 in total nothing big enough to brag about but still nice to get out. Weeds are bad at the shore but if you have a bout fishing can be good!

by Donnie D on Jul. 17, 2016
unless you go out in a boat then dont bother going fishing here..fishing from the shore was a night mare..to much weeds and no bites...weed,s are out of control here

by BigBlueRam on Jul. 2, 2016
Casted from shore for a few hours, tried 6 or so spots, no hits. Weeds are out of control

by CrazyPhD on Jun. 23, 2016
Was there last Saturday. The lake smelt bad and it was unpleasant fishing there. Also the weed was prohibitively a lot. But two weeks ago it was another story. Landed six pike of about 50 cm in two hours with my friend where the culvert was.
by Whsman on Jun. 22, 2016
Disgusting weeds and algae ... Launched my kayak from the north end, it way disgusting and even smelled bad. Dirt bags at the boat launch! Dont go!!

by MitoMan on Jun. 16, 2016
Fishing tough here because of the weed. 3 hours 1 fish and a thousand snag. There is a forest of weed under water.
by MitoMan on Jun. 6, 2016
Yes, there is a washroom by the boat launch, no water though
by dwright on Jun. 6, 2016
Planning to head out this evening with wife and father-in-law anyone know if there is washroom at the north end boat launch? Or should we stop someplace before we get to lake?
by harveyhvac on Jun. 5, 2016
Also make sure you have your whistle, bailing bucket, flash light etc... in your boat. There was a ranger on a jet ski checking everyone.
by harveyhvac on Jun. 5, 2016
Didn't see your tackle there, had a great day out yesterday though. Me and buddies spent 12 hours on the water and caught between 80 and 90 pike. The entire lake was a hot spot. Best day ever. Most of them were around 20"

by Tack Man on May. 29, 2016
Left behind 2 tackle boxes on the North Shore on Friday. One brown/beige Plano about a hundred years old with some spoons and some buzz bombs and some Len Thompson lures. Also had a airplane lure that's vintage. Other tackle box is a blue organizer with a clear lid. But if JB Weld where it cracked. Had my leaders and some lures in it. Plano also had a small organizer with several spinners including Panther Martins. If ya found em I hope they bring you lots of fish.
by newscientist on May. 27, 2016
Yes, the water level is up few inches. Weed remains a challenge though

by Tshort1421 on May. 22, 2016
Anyone fish north shore lately? Water risen at all to help shore fishing with all this rain?

by newscientist on May. 21, 2016
Yes, but prepare for the weed. Coal Lake is famous for being weedy.

by Crazycajun on May. 18, 2016
is the lake good for shore fishing?

by Rusty1 on May. 17, 2016
Out on Sunday first day of season. Three in boat and caught 12 no keepers but had fun. Water is very low so early in season.

by newscientist on May. 15, 2016
Fish were not active as I was hoping, but we caught 2 in couple hours this morning. I was surprised how low was the lake today
by newscientist on May. 10, 2016
Me neither! I can't dare to go to the lake now, I won't be able to stop my self casting :)

by Beerbot on May. 9, 2016
Was out two weeks ago sunday testing the boat . Water was calm and not to chilly . Lake was pretty low but we launched and loaded with no issues at all. Lots of fish jumping . Cant wait for the 15th.

by Crazycajun on Nov. 29, 2015
any ice yet?

by Haitham on Nov. 1, 2015
I think the fish has migrated to the south part of the lake. I spent the whole morning last Tuesday and 2 hours of the evening last Friday and had only 1 bite. I am hesitant to go again. What do you guys think? Do the fish leave the north side at this time of the year

by Rusty1 on Sep. 2, 2015
I fish west side of lake mainly, catch quite a few but to small to keep. I use Len. Thompson spoons mainly light color. On this lake most weekends, enjoyable . Happy fishing!!

by redbeard21 on Sep. 2, 2015
Fished from south end of pier had two small Jack. Tried under bridge on south west end completely covered in algae and weeds 2 inches from surface.

by Haitham on Aug. 31, 2015
There was some action but we could not catch a fish. I guess the fishes in this lake are not as many as they used to be. What do you think guys?

by Riverbear on Aug. 27, 2015
Out this morning on the boat launch end

by LowellG on Aug. 18, 2015
Very good fishing if you like catch and release, lol was out on August 16th and caught about 25 jack fish but no keepers was along the North side of the Lake and trolled the East side beside the weed beds

by Masonbuchanan on Jul. 11, 2015
Clean up your friggen garbage people! North shore is an absolute dump.

by Dlaurent on Jun. 27, 2015
Fished around the whole northside and only landed one pike and one bite. pike was a tiny little thing.

by dylanbmx on Jun. 5, 2015
I've heard this lake is really weedy for boats, is it true or not to bad yet this year?

by Tshort1421 on Jun. 1, 2015
There are big ones, caught 2 63's, and 1 70cm off north shore two weeks ago, kept and enjoyed on the bbq
by Alco on May. 31, 2015
Fished for about 3.5 hours today from the boat and got 16 pike. I don't keep them but 4 were likely keeper size. Launched at the north end. Stuck to the east side as there was less algae. Great day!

by Johnny K on May. 28, 2015
Caught 5 pike today right by the boat launch, had to release all because they were under size, biggest around 50 cm I think... Are there bigger ones in the lake at all? And what about perch?
by Tshort1421 on May. 16, 2015
North side shore fishing, excellent for beginners and kids, tons of action. Small pike, under size but a bite on every second or third cast, caught 9 in 2 hours

by Mk107 on May. 16, 2015
haven't been to coal in a few years, since kid was born. Water level ok?, how's shore casting conditions? He's 3.5 yrs, don't trust him in the boat yet, even with a life jacket. He's pretty good though, 15-20' casts. Lol
by dylanbmx on May. 16, 2015
I clip barbs on every hook I own. I thought it was law to clip them? either way it gives the little guys (releases) a better chance without ripping their mouths and gills to pieces.

by Clazel1 on May. 14, 2015
And it can be more of a challenge to land the fish too!

by Trapper on May. 14, 2015
If you are into catch and release barbless is the only way to go

There is no "barbless" rule currently. Not saying it's doesn't help the fish but still.

Checked out coal last weekend, river on south side was open, so we decided to do some open water fishing, went to bridge in gwynn, there wad chicken wire on both sides of bridge, right across shore to shore not sure how deep but from what i could see it went all the way down, was wondering if anybody knows why its there? Seems to me it would be cutting off a spawning run!

by WildCats on Mar. 11, 2015
Thunderstorm, that was in the 90's. The pike population exploded for a few years and perch have been all but non existent since.

by nmfp on Mar. 1, 2015
My wife and I are out on east side of the lake out bye the point. 4 fish on the ice and lots of bites! Just got a bite while typing this!

by Thunderstorm on Feb. 21, 2015
my understanding is there is perch in coal lake. I talked to dozens of people who have caught plenty of perch in coal. They are what everybody calls jumbo. One of the guys that lives by the lake told me he's caught lots of 9-10" perch. Alberta fishing guide says it has perch and pike. Now I haven't caught any my self but I know in the summer time my fish finder Is loaded with groups of fish all the time.

by kelster on Feb. 19, 2015
There is NO perch in coal lake

by Thunderstorm on Feb. 19, 2015
I fish at the north side of the lake anywhere from once a week up to 3-4 times a week. I have only caught pike but others have gotten perch. I usually get 2-4 each time. Nothing big YET lol. As for north side of the highway it's my favorite spot in the summer lol
by FlounderPounder on Feb. 17, 2015
We were out on the north end 3 weeks ago and talked to a conservation officer who was out checking licences. He said that people fish north of the highway in the summer and catch pike. I've never seen anyone there, but apparently there are fish!

by Brett_irwin on Feb. 16, 2015
Hey guys, just wondering how the fishing is at this lake? And also where to fish? And if anyone was able to find the perch. Also if anyone knows if there are any fish in the little pond across the highway? Thanks any Info would be greatly appreciated

by DMuns on Aug. 10, 2014
Those carp like fish you saw were just suckers. Most lakes have them but they do not have a game fish status so there is no limit on them (I wouldn't eat them) but they also don't ever report on them
by Alco on Jul. 27, 2014
Got 3 pike in 2 hours of mid-morning fishing. Largest about 3 pounds. Algae bloom is very heavy. We trolled the north end quite a ways off shore.

by KodiG on Jul. 12, 2014
This might sound a bit bizarre but just fished past the dam on the camping area and we were seeing a carp like sucker fish 3 and 4 schooling together in the shallower water and we didn't recognize the fish, they were at least 4 pounds a piece. I was just wondering why these fish were not listed on the lakes fish habitants

by Pikster on Jun. 15, 2014
Fishinng along shore is a bit slow, but a nice area regardless. I don't hear much about good perch fishing in this lake. I noticed a limit of five.

There have been times when this lake is on fire with the pike biting good- usually early may. But the last 3 times I've gone out, we threw everything but the kitchen sink out there and would only come up with one, maybe two if we were lucky. Won't be returning until spring.

Went off the shore at the southern boat launch using a slip bobber, a fireball jig and minnows on Sunday. Caught 1 pike about 2.5 lbs in 3 hrs. The launch was really busy so I suspect the action was slower because of that.

Carefull with the boat launch on the north end of the lake. I wasn't able to launch my boat because of large rocks & low water level. A 12ft aluminum should have no problems but a large fishing boat like mine...probably not. 👎
