went with my son Feb 20 th he pulled a tiny plike in the shack but passed. On the tip up pulled a 26 inch out. Nice supper. Only nibbles again for me.

Been here 4 times this winter. 18 pike total. Biggest one was 26". Its been a good season.

Went Jan 22 nd with my son.7:30-2;30. I had two nibbles he pulled 3 out of the shack and one on jaw jacker.

The north end of coal lake on both sides of Hwy 616 always has people fishing from shore, the south end at of coal lake has decent shore fishing but you can also fish the spillway south of the dam.

Can you shore fish here? Is it a long walk from parking to fishing?

Fished yesterday June 5 2020 directly out from north end boat ramp for 3 hours and caught 15 all about 15

Fished from noon to 4 and saw a half dozen on the cam. Only one bit and I landed it on the ice. Lil bugger ! Water is kinda murky can only see about ten feet out. Better luck next time. That's why it's called fishing not catching.

Fished from 2-4. No interest in little lures. A half dozen pike showed up when I deadsticked a savage gear line thru burbot (smallest size). Three of those fish committed. Water was clear enough to see down to the bottom in 10'.

Fish lake often,not many large fish but many just shy of keeper size. We fish in water that is about 8 to 10 feet and have fair success.

A lot of weeds all around the lake, recommend using top water lure

Fished on the North end on both Friday and Saturday... Ice thickness is between 11-12 inches.. People are driving on.. Cars, SUV's, Mini Vans and Trucks..

@duckhunter...was fishing there 2 weeks ago and there was 8" on the north end, drove by last weekend and saw a 1/4 ton pickup on it

Out there today in the afternoon around 2pm. Caught 3 pike, one of which was 60 cm. Wish people were smart to check their regs & throw the pike back in the water that are UNDER 63 com. Poachers.......

Anyone catching here? I'm wanting to take my son to catch some jacks. Any info would be appreciated.

I have major success with an orange 1/2 ounce or 3/8 jig head and a white rubber worm with a flat tail. Not sure what they are called. But regardless they seem to hammer it every time.

Try smelts on a leader/treble hook. 6-12 ft of water. I recently started trying frozen anchovies. The pike are fatter than last winter so I'm using bigger bait.

Can I ask what everyone is using for bait? I have been there a few times and I have fish on the flasher but can't get them to bite. Any help would be great. I have used jigs, jig spoon and rotating power minnow with maggots

Also make sure you have your whistle, bailing bucket, flash light etc... in your boat. There was a ranger on a jet ski checking everyone.

Didn't see your tackle there, had a great day out yesterday though. Me and buddies spent 12 hours on the water and caught between 80 and 90 pike. The entire lake was a hot spot. Best day ever. Most of them were around 20"

Left behind 2 tackle boxes on the North Shore on Friday. One brown/beige Plano about a hundred years old with some spoons and some buzz bombs and some Len Thompson lures. Also had a airplane lure that's vintage. Other tackle box is a blue organizer with a clear lid. But if JB Weld where it cracked. Had my leaders and some lures in it. Plano also had a small organizer with several spinners including Panther Martins. If ya found em I hope they bring you lots of fish.

Out on Sunday first day of season. Three in boat and caught 12 no keepers but had fun. Water is very low so early in season.

Fish were not active as I was hoping, but we caught 2 in couple hours this morning. I was surprised how low was the lake today

Was out two weeks ago sunday testing the boat . Water was calm and not to chilly . Lake was pretty low but we launched and loaded with no issues at all. Lots of fish jumping . Cant wait for the 15th.

Was fishing here on the 5th of march and in 1.5 hrs I caught 35 pike. None stop action. Good lake but a lot of small hammers. South launch is slush so be careful if you drive on. I walked as I don't chance 30k

I think the fish has migrated to the south part of the lake. I spent the whole morning last Tuesday and 2 hours of the evening last Friday and had only 1 bite. I am hesitant to go again. What do you guys think? Do the fish leave the north side at this time of the year

I fish west side of lake mainly,catch quite a few but to small to keep. I use Len. Thompson spoons mainly light color. On this lake most weekends,enjoyable . Happy fishing!!

Fished from south end of pier had two small Jack. Tried under bridge on south west end completely covered in algae and weeds 2 inches from surface.

There was some action but we could not catch a fish. I guess the fishes in this lake are not as many as they used to be. What do you think guys?

Very good fishing if you like catch and release, lol was out on August 16th and caught about 25 jack fish but no keepers was along the North side of the Lake and trolled the East side beside the weed beds

North side shore fishing, excellent for beginners and kids, tons of action. Small pike, under size but a bite on every second or third cast, caught 9 in 2 hours

haven't been to coal in a few years, since kid was born. Water level ok?, how's shore casting conditions? He's 3.5 yrs, don't trust him in the boat yet, even with a life jacket. He's pretty good though, 15-20' casts. Lol

I clip barbs on every hook I own. I thought it was law to clip them? either way it gives the little guys (releases) a better chance without ripping their mouths and gills to pieces.

And it can be more of a challenge to land the fish too!

Checked out coal last weekend, river on south side was open, so we decided to do some open water fishing, went to bridge in gwynn, there wad chicken wire on both sides of bridge, right across shore to shore not sure how deep but from what i could see it went all the way down, was wondering if anybody knows why its there? Seems to me it would be cutting off a spawning run!

Thunderstorm, that was in the 90's. The pike population exploded for a few years and perch have been all but non existent since.

My wife and I are out on east side of the lake out bye the point. 4 fish on the ice and lots of bites! Just got a bite while typing this!

my understanding is there is perch in coal lake. I talked to dozens of people who have caught plenty of perch in coal. They are what everybody calls jumbo. One of the guys that lives by the lake told me he's caught lots of 9-10" perch. Alberta fishing guide says it has perch and pike. Now I haven't caught any my self but I know in the summer time my fish finder Is loaded with groups of fish all the time.

I fish at the north side of the lake anywhere from once a week up to 3-4 times a week. I have only caught pike but others have gotten perch. I usually get 2-4 each time. Nothing big YET lol. As for north side of the highway it's my favorite spot in the summer lol

We were out on the north end 3 weeks ago and talked to a conservation officer who was out checking licences. He said that people fish north of the highway in the summer and catch pike. I've never seen anyone there, but apparently there are fish!

I've been out many times on the north end of the lake. Driven everywhere to just past the point. Ice is a good 18". It takes all the spirals on my manual auger to get threw just the ice. And I drive a 2500 gmc

Those carp like fish you saw were just suckers. Most lakes have them but they do not have a game fish status so there is no limit on them (I wouldn't eat them) but they also don't ever report on them

Got 3 pike in 2 hours of mid-morning fishing. Largest about 3 pounds. Algae bloom is very heavy. We trolled the north end quite a ways off shore.

This might sound a bit bizarre but just fished past the dam on the camping area and we were seeing a carp like sucker fish 3 and 4 schooling together in the shallower water and we didn't recognize the fish, they were at least 4 pounds a piece. I was just wondering why these fish were not listed on the lakes fish habitants

Fishinng along shore is a bit slow, but a nice area regardless. I don't hear much about good perch fishing in this lake. I noticed a limit of five.

Me and my buddy went between 8 and 10 pm and got 6 pike between us, 2 keepers but was alot of fun.

Dose anyone know if the dam is still running at the campsite?

Went there this morning for a couple hrs fished across from the boat launch caught 6 biggest was 50 cm all were released back into the lake. They were grabbing on pike minnow plugs, as well as fluorescent green and orange plug. Fishing was good and very relaxing.

Went early on Sunday. Caught nine fish, all Jack, only one was a keeper. Always good fishing here.

The north end is pretty good of shore early in the season.

Been noticing there's next to nobody fishing here, this season! Throughout the week there's usually quite afew out on the ice and weekends it's normally packed! This year the most I've seen out at one time is 4-6! Everyone fed up, with the small sizes and off to better lakes or what?

Went right off the north dock caught 1 small pike with in five minutes. That's all we saw In 4 hours. One other guy caught one but it was another slow day at coal.

Went out just south of the north boat launch. The ice varies between 5-13 inches all over the north end. A few guys were driving on the ice but I don't think the ice is safe yet. Didn't seem to slushy today didn't see or hear of anyone catching anything. We didn't see anything. Fish and feathers showed up and were handing out fines left right and Center.

I went out on south end, Hwy13 towards Camrose. It 15" of ice until around first set if houses then it's about 12". That's is far as I went out.

Walked out off the north dock. About 100 feet off it turned into slush. We cleared the snow away and it. Filled in with Water. We drilled a hole the ice was about 11 inch. We went out another 200 feet cleared the snow away same thing. But the ice was only about 6 inches thick fished for a few hours in the slush we saw lot of pike but they weren't biting only caught one. I wonder if the south side is any better?

There have been times when this lake is on fire with the pike biting good- usually early may. But the last 3 times I've gone out, we threw everything but the kitchen sink out there and would only come up with one, maybe two if we were lucky. Won't be returning until spring.

Went off the shore at the southern boat launch using a slip bobber, a fireball jig and minnows on Sunday. Caught 1 pike about 2.5 lbs in 3 hrs. The launch was really busy so I suspect the action was slower because of that.

How clear is the water in the lake? Planning to go this weekend

Can you see the bottom of the lake? How clear is it?

Anyone know if if safe to drive out still with half ton??

i fished here for the second time this year. not bad fishing. slow at times but still had a good time. saw lots of small pike and one really massive pike but no bites. didnt see any perch. dose anyone know the best place on coal to try for perch?

Does anyone know if the road to the north boat launch accessable by car or are there frequent snowdrifts?

We went out for 4 hrs today just a ways off the north boat launch I pulled out three just under 24 inches and one about 38 inches it's was a good day. Lots of people out but that wind was cold.

Fished for about 5-6 hours, used minnows for bait. Saw lots of pike in the 18" and up range, stalking my bait but no bites.

My first time here at coal lake. saw some small pike. had lots of fun here its a nice lake.

So has anyone caught any perch in here with some size

No bites on the east side at the very north end. Ice thickness was 13" to 20" depending on where you were. No flood water, hard packed snow. Easy access with a truck. Someone even drove on with a Honda accord

Jan. 4 caught one jack under 63, lots of hits, 18 in. ice 5km south of north end.

Fished all day sat 6 cought 1pike 63cm and one small pike. Ice is 18" thick.

1 pike all day, slow day !!! not worth going too

The ice is decent in spots ! I was on sled yesterday and there are open spots where I was thankful for sled! Don't want to lose truck or pay recovery bill!

Anyone know how thick ice is on coal lake?

Went out for a few hours today, 2 small pike and a few bites. Want to get on the perch but they are sure far and few between.

Dec 15 1012, ice is about 14" thick and the pike are well hidden

We were out there Sunday didn't see any fish but the ice is around a foot thick.

Anyone been out since nov 26?

Somebody should just blow this lake up. It's garbage don't waste your time.

Major algae bloom over the Sept 15th weekend. Still caught a few pike. Threw them all back so I could catch them next time

Was out there on Sept. 9 around the south end and what a disappointment. Nothing but weeds and smelt like a compost dump/sewer.

Nice little lake. Saw plenty of action from shore fishers at the north boat launch. Will be checking it out again.

Carefull with the boat launch on the north end of the lake. I wasn't able to launch my boat because of large rocks & low water level. A 12ft aluminum should have no problems but a large fishing boat like mine...probably not. 👎

Pulled 18 little pike out in 3 hours today. None worth keeping but it made for a nice day out with the kids

You need a boat to fish here. Lots of vegetation near the shore no luck on south or north side of lake.

Large fish jumping, looked like 6 pound trout, no idea what they were but they wouldn't take spinners before they all left

Algee bloom so bad 4 hrs not even a nibble still better than work

Fished across from the campground, caught many little pike and one great looking perch.

Went out today fished the north end , lots of action on east side caught 9 in one hour . No bait either! No keepers tho , one was close (shy by one centimeter) good day !

Lots of fish jumping was gonna try out the fly rod and tips on what to use?

7 jack in 2 hours fished 5-10 feet of water on the northwest end of lake. Small but feisty.

Wow Welder78 this happened to our dog last year but at Alix lake...hope you get some leads..and hope your dog makes it...our dog barely made it

This morning my dog was attacked while we were fishing with my kids on the north shore. The woman whos dogs attacked ran off and wouldn't give me her name. Any info would be extremely helpful. She is a brunette who jogs with her dogs frequently. The dogs r husky cross and there was four of them. I will pay for any info that leads me to the location of this woman and her dogs. My kids r very upset and I am at the vet hospital getting my dogs neck stitched up. Thank u for your help.

Ya the boaters were found one of them was my friends little brother it's a sad story RIP EJ, On a happier note I found the best times for pike are I the evening around 6 and I've never much had luck on the perch In the summer they are good catchin in the winter though.

Got out at noon fished till 330 3small jack no perch

I caught 9 and my buddy caught 3 in 6 hour all but two were to small to keep but at least we caught a few all on the north side. Any one know if there was any sign of the missing boaters yet??

I fished the north east area for 3 hours today and did not catch anything. Used spoons, jigs and rapala and nothing. Very nice lake tho

Canoed the north east edge for 2 hours and caught 5 jack. No keepers though, I've never been able to pull one out of that lake. Neither boater has been found yet.

Fish weed beds anytime for lots of small fiesty jack or for real fun in the spring, try jack on the fly.

Fishing is really slow this year, last year they where hitting everything and this year not much happening. Fished a few different spots but not much luck. Well still hoping they will start biting. Thanks, best of luck to all

Four of us fishing for three hours, no bites. Used 8" smelt for bait, no sign of pike. I also fished a second line for perch with PowerBait maggots, no luck.

Well coal is getting better. If you are going to go its best between 9 and 1. I was out at 5am and didn't get a hit until 8:30 ish. After that I had 6 more and then at like 12-12:30 they shut off again and I didn't get a hit for the rest of the afternoon. Fished in about 10 feet of water closer to shore

Yeah Coal was dissapointing to say the least. Ice is plenty thick enough though roughly 12 inches give or take a inch. The fishing was slowwwww however. No one else was catching anything either. I know last year it was wicked so maybe the afternoon is the wrong time. Morning or evening might be better

Ice is 13" think. Drove across entire lake in 4 door wrangler. Seen a f350 on here also. Slow fishing still this early. Better odds right at sunrise.

Fishing was a bit slow, only got a few bites for the whole day. 10-12" of ice. Don't suggest driving a car just yet, quads or sleds ok

Went out today only cought one.one of the biggest I ever seen come out of there 18lbs

caught a 23 pounder yesterday, there starting to come around again. its been 20 years since i"ve seen the water going over the dam at this late in the year.

Fished off the dock on the east side. No luck. Lots of weeds.

I go out to coal a few times a week from the shore on the east side of the lake and always have great luck as long as you can get them through the weeds... I laugh at ppl on the Alberta outdoorsmen site who say shore fishing is over there... Hahahaha

3 boats out for 3 hours in the evening. Only 2 fish caught between all of us. Lake is full of algae (even more than usual). Some speed boats around in the evenings.

Went out Friday and between the two of us we cought just under 150 pike. Unfortunately only one keeper but they were still energetic and put up a good fight! Couple had very fresh gashes on them so the big ones are out there!

Its really slowed down over the past few days . There headed for deeper water I guess

40 fish day ! Seen a few monsters . But most were under 4 lbs . Still funner then hell

40+ small to medium pike over five hours. Some holding in 10 inches or less of water. Top water was excellent between weather fronts.

Plenty of pike 15-20 inches on north end. Water level is good.

Went out Mar 19, Had many bites and landed 16 small pikes.

Between 2 of us we caught 9 small pike on Tuesday afternoon, it was a blast!

Went out on Sunday early on south end 10 ft of water fishing was the best I ever had best time for me was 8:30 - 10:00 am ever time I put a hook in the water had a bite with in a minute

March 5 , 2011 Fished 3 hours lots of action landed a fourteen pounder , 36inches.

Good day today... Lots of bits .. Pulled 4 out in 2 hours , ice is thick drove on with half ton no problem

Went out all day march 5th. Caught a total of 46 fish, biggest was 6 lbs. Incredible day, my buddy added 10 aswell

Went yesterday and we pulled out 11 pike all were undersized but still a really good day.

Was out Feb 12/11 was pretty slow but pulled one out that was 11 lb and 9 oz and 90cm long, had A other few, you can access the lake on south end but some deisl's are breaking through

Feb 3 2011 south end, 3-4" of snow, 2-4" of surface ice, 2-3" of flood water, then 16" of solid ice. Inaccessible by vehicle, entrance torn up, plus flood ice. quads ands sleds are fine. Walked out, Fished 3-5 FOW (+ ~2ft of ice), landed about a dozen, maybe 30 bites. 2 Hours of nothing, then non stop action

Was out on 27 Jan. and set up on the north side. Sloppy conditions after the weeks warm spell but we still had a great time. Caught around a dozen pike between 4 of us but no keepers. Our biggest was approx. 56cm. It was only our second time on the lake and we are still trying to find the sweet spots.

Wow great day,,,, very cold... Thank god for the frabill predator ice shack..... Loads of action. Must go to south end to catch fish.

Jan. 4 - South end. 19 inches of ice. 7 feet of water. Lots of action but only got 1 on top of ice. Only Small pike. Water is clear and could see bottom without using tent.

Dec 27 14" of ice at South end, in 12 FOW. 2nd trip there this year without even one bite.

8-10 inches of ice south end. Very shallow
